DAVAO CITY – Almost 50 private and public school teachers across the region will attend a Mindanao-wide seminar-workshop on the campaign for salary upgrading tomorrow (March 4).

The event is being sponsored by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers – Philippines with the help of Education International and hosted by the Kahugpungan ng mga Magtutudlo ug Kawani sa Edukasyon sa Mindanao (KAMKEM)–ACT Davao.

According to Elenito Escalante, Chairperson of KAMKEM-ACT, the seminar-workshop aims to strengthen the ranks of the teachers in their fight for just and decent wage.

“Public teachers have been struggling to cope with the times given the meager salary we receive,” he said.

Education International represents nearly 30 million teachers and education workers. It is the world’s largest Global Union Federation, and the only federation representing education workers in every corner of the globe.

The input will include a legislative component of the campaign on salary upgrading which will be presented by ACT TEACHERS Partylist.

“This will highlight the need for a genuine sectoral representation for the teachers in Congress,” Escalante said.

“We need to unite in demanding from the government to provide the right to education which includes the teachers’ economic rights and welfare,” Escalante said.#

ACT Te achers Partyl List condemns the brutal killing of one of its members, Roel Gonzaga Duruja.  Mr. Duruja was an active member of ACT Teachers Partylist . He was the principal of  Nursery Elementary School in Masbate City.

Thirty-eight year old Duruja was in the garage of his residence fixing his car when unidentified armed men shot him to death last February 22, 2010. “Mr. Duruja has contributed significantly to our various campaigns for higher teacher salaries, quality education and good governance,” said Antonio Tinio, ACT Teachers Partylist Chair.

Members of ACT Teachers Partylist express their deepest condolences to  the family of their dear colleague.  “For this yet another account of violence among our ranks, we urgently express our collective demand to end the climate of impunity in the country perpetrated and reinforced by the Macapagal-Arroyo regime through its human rights abuses. A government that survives by failing, time and again, to bring the perpetrators of human rights to justice can only encourage a recurrence of violations,Tinio stressed.

Members of ACT Teachers Partylist nationwide call upon the authorities to end impunity  as they urgently demand justice for fellow teacher and rights advocate Roel Gonzaga Duruja. ###
